Clarke University Athletics issued the following announcement on July 28.
Mental health is health. To raise awareness and erase stigmas surrounding mental health, the Clarke University men's basketball team will host their first ever Hoop for Awareness event at the Kehl Center on Sunday, Aug. 8 at 5:30 p.m. CT.
The idea for the event came from Pride basketball player Jake Schockemoehl following a Dec. 11, 2020 social media post on Schockemoehl's twitter account where he opened up about his battles with depression and anxiety.
From there, the men's basketball head coach Jim Blaine gave Schockemoehl free reign to organize and run the event with the assistance of the program and the ability to use the Kehl Center gym.
Admission will cost $5 with the event to include five-on-five games, a slam dunk contest, a three-point contest, and a half-court shootout. Snacks, drinks, and t-shirts will also be for sale as proceeds will go towards benefiting mental health initiatives.
For more information, interested parties can contact Schockemoehl at primeschock2@gmail.com.
