At the April 17th council meeting, Dubuque city officials celebrated the recognition of one of the city’s hardworking and dedicated commission members.
Recreation Commission member Jennifer Tigges was awarded the Iowa Park and Recreation Association’s (IPRA) Claude Ahrens Community Service award as a part of their 2023 award ceremonies.
Each year, the IPRA awards a handful of individuals and organizations who have exemplified service and dedication to the state’s parks and recreation facilities and programs. The Claude Ahrens Community Service award is presented in honor of Claude W. Ahrens, who was a renowned businessman and community member in the state. He helped fund some of the greatest recreational areas and organizations, donating more than $4 million dollars and 50y acres back in the 1950’s to create the Ahrens/Paschall Memorial Park and the Ahrens Family Center.
“This award recognizes a person who has provided and contributed to the strengthening of programs and resources within their community, area and state,” said Leisure Services director Marie Ware. “More than making the donations, people know that Mr. Ahrens was a wonderful person and a person who thought of others before himself, a person who believed wholeheartedly in the value of parks and recreation for people of all ages, especially children.”
Tigges was congratulated and thanked by every member of the council.
She is a long-time supporter and advocate for the Dubuque community, starting her service and volunteer efforts to the city 31 years ago on the TV and Cable Commission. She has attended seminars and trainings to better serve and meet the needs and desires of the community on each of the many boards and commissions she has served on.
“Jennifer demonstrates extraordinary commitment to Dubuque on each of the committees, boards and commissions she serves on. Jennifer is a major advocate for Parks and Recreation. Dubuque is a better place for all of her efforts,” Ware said.
