Community invited to NICC Peosta campus open house and ribbon cutting Sept. 29

Northeast Iowa Community College invites all community members to attend an open house and ribbon cutting celebrating completed renovations of the Main Building, Industrial Technologies building and the Peosta campus on Thursday, Sept. 29, from 4:30-6 p.m., with a formal ribbon cutting ceremony in the first floor atrium at 4:45 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

The community is invited to tour the newly renovated facility and local leaders, business partners, NICC staff, alumni and students will be attending. Project leaders and contractors, representatives of Straka Johnson Architects, P.C., former NICC President Liang Chee Wee, Ph.D., NICC Board of Trustees chair Jim Anderson and NICC President Herbert Riedel, Ph.D., will speak at the event.

“The newly renovated campus is a tremendous resource for our students and the community. It is attractive and functional. One of the things that stands out to me is the availability of many informal spaces with comfortable seating where students and others can gather, rest between classes, read, talk or browse their computers. There is also an outstanding cafeteria. This is a state-of-the-art modern facility, second to none in the country. Everyone who is considering where to go to college should come out and see this campus. Together with stellar faculty and valuable, in-demand programs this inspiring learning environment will undoubtedly make NICC a top choice,” stated Dr. Riedel.

Trustees Chair Jim Anderson views the successful renovations on campus as the culmination of years of planning and collaboration. “These renovations and campus improvements will offer enhanced learning areas for our students and the community. The successful project is the result of much planning at NICC, and the construction was made possible by district voters who supported our bond levy,” he said.

Completed in four major phases, the approximately $19.1M construction project included updates and improvements to classrooms, labs, learning and student support services, an updated cafe and atrium in the center of the building, as well as improvements on the exterior. Renovations also included a new access point connecting the Main Building to the Industrial Technology building, a new entrance to campus and traffic flow improvements.

The construction project was financed with funds from the $39 million bond levy renewal, passed by district voters in September 2018.
