AmeriCorps members in Dubuque are joining the nationwide celebration of AmeriCorps Week, March 13-19, 2022.
AmeriCorps Week recognizes those who have served in, staffed or managed an AmeriCorps program and the organizations and communities who support national service.
“Our AmeriCorps program is proud to serve Dubuque and we are grateful to have such a supportive community,” said Program Director for City of Dubuque AmeriCorps Program Heather Satterly. “Current AmeriCorps members and alums have made a significant impact on our community, and AmeriCorps Week is a perfect opportunity to celebrate and recognize their great work.”
Since 2000, over 850 AmeriCorps members have dedicated over 475,000 hours of service to the Dubuque community through the City of Dubuque’s Programs. Annually, there are more than 70 AmeriCorps Member positions granted to the program to serve with a variety of community programs, including the Dubuque Community School District, Hillcrest Family Services, St Mark Youth Enrichment, the Multicultural Family Center, the Carnegie-Stout Public Library, and City of Dubuque Departments: Leisure Services, Arts & Culture, and Engineering.
These dedicated citizens help communities manage COVID-19 response, ensure students stay on track to graduate, combat hunger and homelessness, respond to natural disasters, fight the opioid epidemic, help seniors live independently, support veterans and military families, and much more. A growing body of research shows that service influences more than just the communities served, but also on the members themselves. AmeriCorps alumni credit their year of service for developing leadership skills that bridge divides, solve problems, and open doors to career and educational advancement.
