Loras

Loras College recently issued the following announcement.

Faith Vincent (’23) has been selected as a Newman Civic Fellow by Campus Compact, a Boston-based non-profit organization working to advance the public purposes of higher education. Gardiner is one of 173 students nationally who will make up the organization’s 2022-2023 cohort of Newman Civic Fellows.

“I appreciated being someone students could come to when they had questions not only about school but also life,” Vincent said. “Many students expressed to me how much they wished there was some type of peer-to-peer tutoring offered so they could feel empowered to find their own tutors in pursuit of better success in their classes. I plan to look into the feasibility of expanding and strengthening existing tutoring programs that could not only provide educational assistance to students but also provide opportunities for other students to enhance their skills and leadership by being the tutor/mentor.”

Dan Mulligan, academic success coordinator, helped to nominate Vincent for the fellowship. He cites her focus on helping other students makes her a deserving recipient of the fellowship.

“Faith has displayed a penchant for integrity, service and concern for others, along with her research aptitude,” he said. “She has expressed interest in examining how Loras might enhance its tutoring and/or mentoring services, and through my role, I believe these areas might greatly enhance our students’ opportunities to reach their academic goals while also working to support our institutional retention percentage as well.”

Through the fellowship, Campus Compact provides the students with various learning and networking opportunities that emphasize personal, professional and civic growth. Each year, Fellows are invited to a national, in-person conference of Newman Civic Fellows and participate in numerous virtual training and networking opportunities. The fellowship also provides fellows with pathways to apply for exclusive scholarship and post-graduate opportunities. Campus Compact is a national coalition of colleges and universities committed to the public purposes of higher education. Campus Compact supports institutions in fulfilling their public purposes by deepening their ability to improve community life and educate students for civic and social responsibility.
