Awais was nominated for this award for responding to an official who collapsed on the football field just before the second half kickoff. The official suffered a cardiac episode, and Awais provided emergent care to ensure he was stable prior to transport to the local hospital by EMS.
The SAWA award represents sportsmanship, which is one of the core values of the IHSA. Since 2015, officials have the ability to recognize acts of exemplary sportsmanship and integrity that occur in IHSA events throughout the school year.
Awais graduated from Loras with a degree in Athletic Training. He is currently a certified athletic trainer (ATC) Joliet West High School in Illinois.
