The Dubuque City Council is looking for a first ward resident to fill the city council vacancy following First Ward Councilman Brett Shaw's resignation.
Those interested in being considered for appointment must submit a letter of interest or resume to the City Clerk's office, 50 W. 13 St., Dubuque, IA 52001 or at ctyclerk@cityofdubuque.org by noon on Monday, July 20.
A map of Dubuque's first ward can be found here. The Dubuque County Elections Office can also be contacted at 563-589-4457 to verify a specific address. Interviews will be held at a special virtual city council meeting on Thursday, July 23 at 6 p.m. The appointment will be made at the special session Monday, July 27.
First ward voters do have a right to petition that the city council hold a special election to fill the vacancy, according to the City of Dubuque's website. It would have to be signed by at least 157 voters and filed with the County Clerk by July 27 or by August 10. If a petition is received after the appointment is made, the appointment will be temporary and whoever is selected during the special election will fill the seat until the next regular election in November 2021.
