Dubuque recently unveiled guidelines for dog and cat owners who want to walk their pets, stating that they are now permitted on most trails, parks, parkways and open spaces but there are some exceptions.
Restrictions are placed on dogs and cats in certain areas, according to the City of Dubuque's website.
Dogs and cats are not allowed in Bunker Hill Golf Course, Eagle Point Park, buildings or facilities within parks which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Flora Park Swimming Pool, Marshall Park and Dubuque Arboretum and Botanical Gardens, Murphy Park, Nicholas J. Sutton Swimming Pool and Veterans Memorial Plaza within the Gerald “Red” McAleece Park and Recreation Complex. They are also not allowed in fenced-in sporting areas, including, but not limited to, courts, fields, rinks, arenas and skate parks, on playground and recreational areas designed for use by children, and where a prohibitory sign is posted.
Service animals are exempt from the restrictions. Pet owners also are reminded to pick up after their pet and they must bring their own waste bags. Unleashed animals may be impounded and violations could be reported to the city.
There are some places for unleashed dogs to roam in the Dubuque area. They are permitted in the Pet Park and under certain circumstances, they are allowed in the John G. Bergfeld Recreation Area ponds, but only when the dog is working or exercising by their owner. For more information, phone (563) 589 4263.
