The City of Dubuque is expanding a program reducing utility fees for lower income residents starting July 1, the city’s web page at cityofdubuque.org announced.
The expanded opportunity for lower rates will apply to city utilities such as water, sewer, garbage collection and storm water fees.
The city website said the previous discounts included garbage and storm runoff, but now includes water and sewer fees as well.
Residents who qualify may receive up to a 50% discount off their base (minimum) rates. Current monthly minimum rates are $7.66 for water, $8.29 for storm runoff, $10.53 for sewer services and $14.99 for garbage pick-up.
Applicants must be city residents and be able to demonstrate lower-income status. Income standards are those used by the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
Income maximums to qualify include from $29,050 per year for a one-person household to $54,750 for an eight-person residence. Households with two to seven residents are in between those rates.
The city website said officials reserve the right to limit the number of applications based on income, the number of people applying and available funding for the program.
The program is annual. Applicants who want to repeat must re-qualify each year based on income and eligibility.
