The City of Dubuque has implemented a new rental and mortgage assistance program to handle a potential surge in evictions amid COVID-19.
“It is a short-term program, so it is only for three months but it can go toward rent, utilities or mortgage payments,” Housing and Community Development Department Director Alex Steger told KCRG.
The three-month program will provide $1,000 per month to individuals who have lost at least half of their income due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to KCRG. It was created in response to Gov. Kim Reynolds’ foreclosure and eviction ban expiring this week.
KCRG reports that while homeless shelters are preparing to accommodate more people, they hope they don’t have to.
“We want to keep them at the places they are currently in and not have them become homeless,” Dubuque Rescue Mission Executive Director Rick Mihm told KCRG.
The Mission, as reported by KCRG, currently houses 20 individuals and will be able to house up to 50 by the fall.
