A property tax increase was discussed at the Dubuque City Council meeting Feb. 17 for the fiscal year 2021.

An increase of 2.27 percent for residential property taxes was considered.

The increase in taxes would go toward supplying more public safety, helping nonprofits and increasing water quality throughout the city by expanding the size of the city’s water and sanitary system and other projects to benefit the city.

Before the property tax increase is approved for next year, the 2021 budget will be discussed further by the city council in six special departmental meetings.

In these meetings, department heads will present their budgets for the fiscal year 2021. The meetings are open to the public and will also discuss which projects the money will go toward, the City of Dubuque’s website said.

The city’s website also said, the final Dubuque City Council meeting for next year’s property tax increase will be held on Thursday, March 26.
