Preventing Falls is a Team Effort

0Comments

Falls and accidents can happen to anyone at any age. However, falls can happen more frequently for older adults resulting in serious injury. As your local therapy professionals, we are here to tell you these types of falls can be prevented by teaming up with family, friends, and local healthcare professionals. If you or someone you know is starting to fall more frequently, the below resources are a great way to help ensure safety and prevention of falls.

Find a good balance and exercise program. This may be as simple as becoming a member of a wellness center or simply scheduling a walk in your daily schedule. The team at RMC Therapy Services can also design a personalized balance and exercise therapy program specifically for you.

Talk to your primary healthcare provider. Ask your provider for a fall risk assessment. Share all the recent falls or incidents that have occurred.

Review your medications with your pharmacist. Make sure the medications you are taking aren’t increasing your risk of imbalance and falling. Regular reminders of how to take your medications is always important.

Get your vision and hearing checked. Try to make these appointments an annual visit to ensure your ears and eyes are functioning well to keep you on your feet.

Keep your home safe. Your environment is a key factor when preventing falls. Remove tripping hazards, increase lighting, make stairs safe by installing handrails, and install grab bars in key areas.

Talk with your family. Reach out to your support system and let them help you take steps to have a safe and healthy lifestyle. If you have a loved one who is at high risk of falls, be the one to reach out to ensure their safety.

Pull together your local team and we will help protect your health and independence. Call RMC Therapy Services at 563-927-7322 if you have any further questions.
