The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) will award $6.6 million in transit infrastructure funding, Elaine Chao, the U.S. Transportation secretary, said.
The funding is being granted to enhance the safety and reliability of the bus systems in the state. Additionally, the funding will be used to improve mobility for all transit passengers.
The transit authority said it will replace, recondition and purchase new buses. The authority also plans to reconstruct bus facilities and stops.
The Jule transit authority that runs through the City of Dubuque will get $1 million from FTA’s Grants for Buses and Bus Facilities Program. The Jule transit authority will acquire zero-emission transit vehicles to combat greenhouse gasses.
Plans include new bus stops for pedestrians. The stops will be powered by solar energy. New ticket vending machines will be installed as well.
“This funding will assist The Jule in its continued goal to implement a sustainable and environmentally sound fleet,” Director of Transportation Services Renee Tyler said in a press release.
FTA Deputy Administrator K. Jane Williams said millions of Americans rely on public transportation to access healthcare, jobs and other vital services.
“During this unprecedented time, we need to ensure access and mobility for the riders who depend on our nation’s bus systems,” Williams said in a press release.
